As Jennifer Lopez, Neil Meron, and Craig Zadan prepare to cast NBC’s ‘Bye Bye Birdie Live!’, supporting roles are just as vital as the lead characters.
One of the most important supporting characters in ‘Bye Bye Birdie’ is that of Harry MacKafee.
Mr. MacKafee is an ornery, ultra-protective father to Kim MacKafee – the teenaged girl selected to give Elvis-like rock star Conrad Birdie one last kiss before he goes into the army.
Kelsey Grammer established himself playing a cranky know-it-all psychiatrist on ‘Cheers’ and spin0ff ‘Frasier.’ Since then he has distinguished himself in both comedy and dramas including ‘Boss,’ ‘Toy Story 2’, ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’ and ‘Benedict Arnold: A Question of Honor.’
The multi-talented character actor has won five Emmy Awards, three Golden Globe Awards, and one Tony Award. He was the first American actor ever to be nominated for multiple Emmy awards for portraying the same character on three different television shows (‘Cheers,’ ‘Frasier,’ and ‘Wings’).
Grammer might just have the right mix of comic delivery and over-the-top angst to bring the role of Harry MacKafee to life in JLo’s ‘Bye Bye Birdie Live.’
One thing is for certain, having starred on television, silver screen, and Broadway stage, Grammer is not afraid to step out of his comfort zone and try new forms of entertainment.
