As casting heats up on NBC’s ‘Bye Bye Birdie Live!’ starring Jennifer Lopez and produced by JLo, Neil Meron, and Craig Zadan, supporting roles are just as interesting as casting for the lead characters.
Dick Van Dyke starred as Albert in the original 1960 Broadway production of ‘Bye Bye Birdie.’ He won a Tony for his performance and recreated the character in the 1963 movie opposite Janet Leigh as Rosie and Ann-Margaret as Kim.
Other notable credits for the award-winning actor include Burt in ‘Marry Poppins”, Rob Petrie in the CBS sitcom ‘The Dick Van Dyke Show’, Caractacus Pott in the film ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ and Dr. Mark Sloan in the television show ‘Diagnosis Murder.’ In addition to winning a Tony for his role in ‘Bye Bye Birdie,’ Van Dyke has also won a Grammy, and multiple Emmy awards.
When it was announced a Walt Disney Pictures sequel to ‘Mary Poppins’ is in the works starring ‘Hamilton’ creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda as Burt and Emily Blunt as Marry Poppins, Van Dyke revealed that he will be making a cameo in the movie.
Van Dyke making a cameo in ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ opens up the door for him to also revisit the ‘Bye Bye Birdie’ Universe.
Van Dyke may be the perfect actor to bring the role of the Mayor of Sweet Apple to television audiences. It would be great to see the legendary actor in ‘Bye Bye Birdie Live!’ in some capacity.
